Rhinos with Camera Implants Fight Against Poachers

A  a UK-based non-profit named Protect created a new system for stopping poachers. Giving rhinos GPS tags, heart rate monitors, and camera implants in their horns.

Part of a system called Real-time Anti-Poaching Intelligence Device (RAPID)  embedded in its skin and horn — the camera can be installed in the horn without any  harm to the animal.






If a rhino is ever attacked by poachers the change in heart rate will alert operators at a control center. If poachers are observed in the live video feed, park authorities can be sent to the animal’s aid in a matter of minutes using the transmitted GPS coordinates. The rapid response will (hopefully) leave poachers with no time to harvest horns or escape from the scene.
An estimated 1,200+ rhinos were killed by poachers in South Africa last year, which is about one killing every eight hours. It’s estimated that species of rhinos could go extinct within the next decade if nothing is done about the issue.
Protect hopes to widely deploy the RAPID over the next couple of years, and that knowledge of this new, high-tech system will deter poachers and force them to think twice before killing another rhino for its horns.

Black Dogs Project

This photo series started after a conversation about how black dogs have a harder time getting adopted than other dogs. I decided to start a photo series photographing black dogs on a black background in my studio. Using social media, I recruited local dog owners who have black dogs to photograph. It's an amazing journey that will become a book in the fall of 2015.

Welcome Students

Our Honorary Mascot Brandy

This is a resource guide for everyone to check in on for information throughout the course and beyond. I am going to leave the helpful hints up so you all can post comments to me and each other for a greater understanding. 

As part of the RISE Digital Image class this site is designed for both the traditional in class course and a online class as well. Displaying all the exercises and photos used in the class accompanied by video and reading material.  

Those of you learning at home have the advantage of learning from home at your leisure but need to be a bit more computer confident. Rivier provides the latest version of photoshop in its labs but I will be covering the most common tools and the basics used in most photo editing programs. Having a good computer with a version of Adobe Photoshop is recommended. I will also try my best to answer and questions that come up during the course via email or poasts. 

This is a bit of a experiment for all of us I will be learning new things as well over the upcoming 9 weeks.

Ethereal Insect Photographs Will Cure Your Phobia of Bugs 

Malaysian photographer Lee Peiling created images so fantastic, it feels like you're peering into another world. A world populated with helpful praying mantises and ants ready to lend a helping hand.
The photographer utilized the Bokeh photography  (How To video and reading ) technique to achieve the ethereal quality of the macro-photos. The bokeh technique emphasizes the aesthetic quality of out of focus areas and how those blurred areas render light. The highlights in those blurred areas usually produce a halo of light.
